Diving Into the Deep End

Thursday July 20, 2006

So, the week after I got advice about putting myself out there, I applied for and got a research internship. Officially, I’ve been working there since the beginning of this week, but logistical issues have kept me from actually working at the office. There’s been lots of phone calls and collaborative work done over email, but tomorrow will be my first actual day working in person.

It’ll be great and a lot of fun, I know. But I checked my answering machine a little while ago and found the following message from the researcher I’m working with:

You know what? I’m not going to bother with easing you in. First thing on the agenda tomorrow is a major meeting with [his boss] and [his boss’ boss]. Be there in the morning, even if I’m not, and participate.

I think I understand the phrase “baptism by fire” now.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go contemplate the wisdom of being careful what I wish for. And maybe freak out some.
