A Belated Anniversary of Sorts

Monday January 30, 2006

Yesterday was lunar new year, and roughly two years ago—during the start of the Year of the Monkey—I resurrected this blog from the cold, cold ashes of an empty website. I suppose that counts as a belated anniversary of sorts?

Looking back, it’s somewhat scary—and shameful—to see how much time has gone by, and how little I’ve written (2006, especially has gotten off to a terrible start). I imagine anyone still loyal enough to read what I post here is sick of me constantly apologizing for it, but my plans never seem to pan out. The drafts of posts, especially, seem to languish for weeks—and by the time I return to them, so many no longer seem relevant. Unlike when I was living in Australia, I feel like my usual method of taking time to reflect before posting works against me in such a time-sensitive blogosphere. When writing about cross-cultural differences, taking the time to think things over was more an asset than not; but when the only things I have to discuss are politics or current affairs or the details of my usually straightforward life, everything has already been said, somewhere, before I manage to open a new document and start typing.

That said, I’ve no intention of letting go of this little piece of the web. Sure, it may not have as much content as I’d like—not by a long shot—but there is a reason that I’ve never managed to let a website of mine stay dead; they’re always brought back to life eventually. And two years in, I see no reason to reboot or start over. Even if I never tap into it in its entirety, I see its potential as being too great.

(And besides—I’m still very fond of the design, even if no one else is. So, nyah.)

At any rate, it’s been two years and here’s hoping for at least two more. Happy Year of the Dog, everybody.
