While the Billy Boils
I think my cable modem has finally been dispossessed/started taking medication for its bipolar disorder/got back into the good graces of the Internet’s Customs Service. I’ll make an effort to finish the handful of entries I started over the last week and post them soon.
In the meantime, I would like to express my utter relief that the Olympics are ending very, very soon. Beyond the sheer idiocy of most American network coverage, I’m currently overdosing on “The Star-Spangled Banner”. While I like my anthem very much, I’ve heard it so often lately that it’s beginning to lose all meaning to me. I now continue doing whatever I’m doing when the familiar music plays, and am far more interested when the band plays music from Morocco or Argentina or wherever.
And if I’m happily American, imagine how it bad it is for citizens of other nations.
Indeed, it’s become so bad lately that I felt compelled to download “Waltzing Matilda” from iTunes earlier tonight. I know it’s not Australia’s official anthem, but I heard “Advance Australia Fair” all of once—on ANZAC Day—while “Waltzing Matilda” was everywhere. I couldn’t go into a pub and not hear it; it didn’t matter where I was there to party, have dinner, or a single drink. I still heard it.
So, now, it’s on endless repeat. I’m considering it a subtle rebellion.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, my kettle’s whistling. I’m going to have a cuppa and then go to bed. Good night.
