Pen Lust: Yukari

Saturday August 7, 2004

Okay, okay—I’ll admit it. Despite my aspirations to be a tough girl who doesn’t need anything but her friends, I have a real weak spot for the finer things in life. I like Godiva chocolates, Steinway pianos, silk and satin pajamas, thick linen stationery. Granted, I’ve rarely been able to afford such things, but that hasn’t stopped me from daydreaming about them.

Meet my newest object of lust: Namiki’s Yukari fountain pen. As a lefty, I’ve had bad luck with fountain pens in the past—but I don’t care. I’ve never used one—hell, I’ve never touched, or even seen, one—but I want one, badly. I want to put that 18kt gold nib, preferably a fine one, to a silky-smooth piece of heavy paper and watch confidently and assuredly elegant lines form in its wake. I want to hold that lacquered barrel between my fingers and feel the flex of a well-made nib adapting itself into my idiosyncrasies.

Shush, Syntax—I can hear you grumbling from here. Keep liking your bold, thick lines and your broad attention-seeking nibs. My heart’s set on the understated class of an unbroken but unhesitant thin line.

Someday, I’ll make enough money to buy a $1500-2000 pen; one I can use and love for much longer than even my faithful silver-barreled 0.3mm Staedtlers, and pass down to somebody who loves the experience of writing with fine tools as much as I do. A daughter, maybe?

How could I shut a pen that comes in a design called “Cherry Blossom” out of my heart?
